Dear Colleagues,

In collaboration with Elsevier and the CSIRO, the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute is delighted to hold the first Asia Pacific Conference on the Metabolic Syndrome (APCMS) in Melbourne.

This inaugural event brings to the fore a condition that is dramatically impacting the health of nations across the region. The APCMS aims to review and update the busy specialists, GPs and healthcare professionals with the latest scientific and clinical developments in the area. Working with our partners, we have invited leading world experts to discuss and share with us their insights on some of the latest advances in prevention, detection and management of the condition, particularly in the Asian context.

Through this event, we hope to promote further interaction and collaboration between physicians from all parts of Asia and Australasia. We would like to invite you to join us in this exciting and educational event and look forward to your participation.

Dear Delegates,

Treating the metabolic syndrome is the therapeutic challenge of the decade. By 2025, it is estimated that more than 380 million people could suffer from diabetes, according to the IDF.

A large majority of this shocking number will occur in Asia and will go on to cardiovascular disease. The IDF has produced a global definition in an effort to harmonise the diagnostic criteria for the metabolic syndrome. The core feature of this definition is the presence of central obesity for which ethnic and gender-specific values are provided. In addition any two of the four following factors must also be present: raised triglycerides, low HD, hypertension and impaired fasting glycaemia.

It is against this backdrop that I would like to welcome you to the Asian Pacific Conference on the Metabolic Syndrome in Australia. The conference will encompass two parallel suites covering scientific and clinical aspects of the management of the condition. The suites will define the latest clinical needs for physicians and will offer an opportunity for the exchange ideas and thoughts that will help inform clinical practice. The conference will also contain notable international experts discussing topics of pertinent clinical relevance to the situation we live in today.

I hope you will share in our enthusiasm for this event and I look forward to welcoming you to the delightful city of Melbourne in November, 2009.
